English

Objective: This study investigates the role of social media in enhancing knowledge, social and economic innovation, and sustainable development in the metropolis of Tehran. Specifically, the study aims to examine how social media influences different dimensions of sustainable development and to identify the structural relationships among key variables associated with this process. Methods:A mixed-methods approach was adopted to address the research objectives. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM). The statistical population consisted of 150 specialists and experts in the fields of social media, sustainable development, and digital entrepreneurship in Tehran. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Results:The findings indicate that social media has a statistically significant effect on sustainable development. From an economic perspective, social media platforms contribute to the development of digital entrepreneurship and facilitate financial crowdsourcing. From a social perspective, they play a significant role in professional networking and social mobilization. From an environmental perspective, social media contributes to increased awareness and participation in environmental activities. The results of the Interpretive Structural Modeling analysis further reveal that the dissemination of misinformation constitutes the most influential root variable, affecting other variables within the structural model. This finding highlights the critical importance of content management and information verification in social media environments. Conclusion:The findings demonstrate that social media has considerable potential to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals. However, realizing this potential effectively requires addressing challenges such as misinformation and strengthening mechanisms for content management and information verification. Accordingly, enhancing media literacy, improving digital infrastructure, supporting digital entrepreneurship, and promoting environmental awareness can facilitate the more effective use of social media in advancing sustainable development. Harnessing the potential of social media to enhance public awareness, foster innovation, and strengthen civic participation is therefore essential for achieving sustainable development objectives in metropolitan contexts.
